ANNO ALL'ESTERO

L'inizio delle superiori ha portato un sacco di novità e tra queste anche la scoperta della possibilità di trascorrere un anno all'estero: intorno a me sentivo compagni che raccontavano le loro avventure oltreoceano, ascoltavo coloro che desideravano partire e  mi accorgevo di chi all'improvviso non si vedeva più nei corridoi di scuola poiché era partito per l'Australia o la Repubblica Dominicana.
Seguire l'esempio di questi ragazzi e andare per un anno negli Stati Uniti, fino all'anno scorso, era un sogno che pensavo fosse irrealizzabile, ma a novembre di quest'anno tutto è cambiato.
Con i miei genitori l'argomento era venuto fuori alcune volte, ma non sembrava che lo prendessero davvero sul serio e io non volevo insistere, visto che comunque la parte economica sarebbe stato un problema non indifferente; in realtà mi sbagliavo, poiché loro avevano capito quanto ci tenevo e sarebbero stati felici di offrirmi un'opportunità simile.
Così, la sera del 4 novembre, mi sono ritrovata ad un incontro con la YouAbroad per raccogliere un po' di informazioni su questa associazione che, come tutte le altre, a me era ancora sconosciuta.
La mia prima impressione era stata molto positiva, mi erano sembrate persone chiare, competenti ed entusiaste del proprio lavoro e anche se avevo cercato informazioni  su altre organizzazioni sapevo già su quale sarebbe ricaduta la scelta.
Il mio sogno stava pian piano diventando realtà e dopo tanta attesa, il 27 novembre, ero con i miei genitori per affrontare il primo dei tanti ( anzi tantissimi) passi verso gli USA.
Il primo colloquio con YouAbroad era andato bene e dopo pochi giorni avevo ricevuto la telefonata da parte della psicologa che avrebbe determinato la mia partecipazione al programma di exchange students.
La mia ansia era alle stelle, camminavo avanti e indietro per la stanza con il cellulare in mano, aspettando il momento in cui la suoneria mi avrebbe avvisato della chiamata; mia madre continuava a dirmi di calmarmi, che sarebbe andato tutto bene, ma il mio pensiero fisso era che se non fossi riuscita a trasmettere quanto profondamente desideravo questa opportunità, tutto sarebbe finito.
Certo, sarei stata pronta ad accettare anche un esito negativo, ma non è ciò che avrei voluto ricevere.
Alla fine, però, tutte le mie preoccupazioni sono svanite: la psicologa era stata davvero molto gentile e mi aveva messa a mio agio e dopo pochi giorni di tensione in attesa di una risposta, era arrivata l'email con il contratto da firmare!!

La prima volta in cui la casella delle mie email è stata torturata dalla sottoscritta, che ogni minuto aggiornava la casella postale, nella speranza della fatidica email e ancora adesso nell'attesa di una famiglia sono sempre con un occhio vigile sulla piccola icona.
Continuando con il lungo viaggio verso la realizzazione del mio sogno, dopo il contratto, sono arrivate le applications ( una cartacea e una online).
Ho avuto a disposizione tre settimane per compilare tutti i documenti e purtroppo tra verifiche di fine trimestre e preparative per pranzi e cene di Natale, il tempo per concentrarmi sull'application diminuiva giorno dopo giorno.
Scrivere la lettera per la host family e scegliere le foto per farmi conoscere, sono state le cose più difficili da fare: ci sono voluti giorni per decidere, ma per fortuna tutto è stato inviato entro la data stabilita.
E' stato necessario più di un mese per avere tutti i documenti in regola tra vaccini, analisi e un nuovo passaporto.
Grazie alla pazienza dei miei genitori e alla mia determinazione siamo riusciti a finire tutto e solo l'ELTIS test mi separava dalla spedizione dei documenti negli Stati Uniti, ma di questo ve ne parlerò in un altro post.

LETTERA ALLA HOST FAMILY

Tra tutti i documenti che ho dovuto compilare, dovevo anche scrivere una lettera alla host family per descrivermi e rendere più facile la loro scelta ( sì, sono le famiglie che scelgono chi ospitare).
Ci è voluto un sacco di tempo per scriverla: ogni volta che la rileggevo c'era qualcosa che non mi convinceva, ma dopo mille correzioni e dopo aver capito che avrei sempre dimenticato qualcosa, mi sono decisa ad inviarla!
avevo un sacco di idee in mente e non mi sono fatta bastare un unico foglio di word ( come scritto nelle indicazioni) ma capitemi, sarà la mia famiglia per un anno e voglio che sappiano più cose possibili su di me per scegliermi....
ok, la smetto, ecco la mia lettera, anche se so che ci saranno un sacco di errori, alla fine sono contenta di come sia venuta!

Dear host family,
My name is Camilla, I’m a sixteen years old girl from a little city in the North of Italy: Lecco.
What I like the most of my city is the variety of activity that people can do outdoor.
My family is composed by:
my mum, Antonella, is 59 and works as a public employee of the finances ministry. She is an extraordinary person; I have a lot of fun with her.
Her passion is acting, in fact, she is part of an acting company in Lecco called “Il Filoteatro”, I think she is very talented and I love watching her performances, we spend a lot of time together and she is very open-minded to every new activity that I offer her to do.
My father, instead, is 43 and he is an employee in an American IT company: Verizon, he is very good at his job and often he receives many appreciations.
In the weekend he turn himself from a normal employee in a hardened hockey player, even if he has been training only for almost a year, he loves it and learns very quickly. Twice he tried to teach me ice-skating but my balance is quite bad and I spent most of the time clanged to his arm trying not to fall on the frozen ground.
Other two members of our family are two amazing dogs: Wally and Eve ( yes, we chose the name due to the Pixar’s movie. We all love it!); they are very special for us and sometimes I find myself talking to them like if they were humans, but I’m pretty sure they often understand us better than people.
They spend most of their time running and playing in our terrace and house or sleeping side by side in their big dog basket.
I’m an only child and sometimes I wonder how it would have been if I have had a sibling older or as my age that could have helped me growing up.
However, I have some very close friends that for me are like siblings because I have known them for many years and with them I feel comfortable. We have a very strong relationship based on confidence, and we can rely each other, but because of the school, the weekend is nearly the only moment when I can meet them.
The other day of the week, beyond studying, my parents and I take turns to walk the dogs and usually I walk them in the afternoon, I like it because I can relax before going home and do my homework.
I am a very active girl and there are a lot of activity that I enjoy doing : in summer my friends and I go to the lake to swim or I love riding my bike around the city. Usually, in summer, my family and I go to Croatia where there is an amazing sea and many activities to do.
Walking on the lakeside or up to the mountains is one of the best exercise I like to do outdoor.
I have played basketball for two years and although I wasn’t very good at it I had a lot of fun, but unfortunately for some logistical problem I had to stop training.
However, now I like to keep fit going to the gym also because I think it’s a way to challenge myself and to know new people.
When the weather is rainy or it’s too cold to stay out, I go for a movie with my friends at the movie theater or I like to play table games with my family. My favorite moment of the year is Christmas: I love how all the family reunite to celebrate this moment, to decorate the houses or to prepare the Christmas lunch, and when there is enough snow on the mountain I love do Alpine skiing with my family during Christmas holiday.
Since I was a little girl, my parents convey their passion for travelling and when there is the possibility, we leave our town to discover new Countries, cities and their cultures. I’m very grateful to my parents to made me discover such amazing places around me.
My love for travelling is one of the reason because I attend the languages high school in my city.
Nowadays languages seems to be very important because we can easily go around the world and we need to communicate, and as well is significant/relevant to have a good job in the future. 
I study English, Spanish and German; English is my favorite language but in this three years I have really gotten into German and this March I’m going to be an exchange student in Germany for one week.
My friend say I’m a cheerful and talkative girl but I’m also quite “shy”.
However I’m overcoming it and I’m becoming more extroverted thanks to an acting project that I have been attending for 2 years with my school, I really enjoy it and I found a lot of new friends, and also I put myself and my self-confidence to the test.
I’m also a very determined person and it’s very rare that I give up on something, so if I want to do something is very hard that I change my mind, however I’m very respectful of the people around me and the rules that I have to follow.
Music is a very huge part of my life, I can’t live a day without music, and I don’t like only listen to it but I also play Clarinet and this year I started taking up singing lessons ( a little dream that I have always had ).
I have been playing the Clarinet for 5 years and since 2013, I play in the city band. I had a lot of fun and it gave me the possibility to know many awesome people.
Like my mum gave me the passion for theatre, my father passed on his passion for computers and technology to me, he taught me many things about computers and how they work.
Maybe I will follow in my father's footsteps and I will work in an IT company, IT has always fascinated me.
Another major passion is cooking: some years ago, I started discovering cooking and since then I continue to improve myself with new Italian recipes or sometimes I like to try cooking dishes of other cultures (yes, America too!). I find it very relaxing and I had a lot of fun, especially if there is someone with me.
I love spend my time with my friends and family but once in a while I rather stay on a comfortable sofa reading a good book with music in the background.
I think that reading is a great thing for everybody because you can escape from the reality and go in a new world that you choose.
Going to America has always been my dream and stay there for a year is a priceless opportunity that I would have never thought could become reality!
I have already come to USA, to visit my relatives in Ohio, but I stayed a very limited time; however, that has increased my love for your Country.
I can’t wait to know who you will be, but even if I haven’t know you yet, I am sure you will be an amazing host family because, choosing me, you will make my dream come true and I will never thank you enough for this.
This year will be an experience that will help me to grown up, teach me how relate to a different culture, it will give me the chance to be a member of a new community.
I know that at the beginning will not be easy to stay away from home but I know that I can face it and I’m so determined that I’m sure this will never stop me to have fun and enjoy this adventure in USA.
However, I hope this experience allowed me not only to acquire something from you, but also to give you something of my Country, convey some traditions, let you have a taste of some Italian dishes and why not, if you want, teach you some Italian words!
It was very difficult to describe my life and me in one letter but I hope to give you everything you need to start knowing me.

#1 HERE I AM!

Ciao, sono Camilla, ho 16 anni e quest'estate partirò per un anno oltreoceano!
Dopo mesi passati a leggere post su post di molti exchange students, ho finalmente trovato ( anche se un po' in ritardo) il coraggio di aprire un blog tutto mio che sarà  il mio diario da riempire di ricordi per quando questa avventura sarà finita e per rivivere ogni momento di questo incredibile viaggio che mi cambierà, sicuramente, la vita.
Inoltre, voglio condividere con voi la mia esperienza ,nella speranza di esservi di aiuto nella  decisione di mettervi in gioco e di sfidare voi stessi , come ho  scelto di fare io.
Prima di raccontarvi ciò che è successo in questi mesi vorrei presentarmi, così che possiate conoscermi un po'. :)
Vivo in una piccola città in Lombardia, Lecco, dove frequento il liceo linguistico; le lingue mi hanno sempre affascinato e la mia passione per i viaggi non ha fatto altro che aumentare questo mio interesse.
Altre mie grandi passioni sono la musica e il teatro: suono il clarinetto da un po' di anni e quest'autunno ho iniziato a prendere lezioni di canto, mentre l'amore per il teatro è nato grazie ad un progetto scolastico con il quale sono riuscita a superare, o almeno a ridimensionare.... la mia timidezza.
Sono una ragazza determinata, ma sensibile e  una grande sognatrice; mi piacciono le avventure che siano per me una sfida continua; certo, l'idea di lasciare tutto ciò che è conosciuto e che mi rassicura quotidianamente, mi spaventa, ma allo stesso tempo il pensiero di una vita nuova che mi aspetta dall'altra parte del mondo mi entusiasma fino a farmi superare ogni timore.
Ho sempre amato conoscere nuovi luoghi e nuove culture, viaggiare è una parte integrante della mia vita.
Gli Stati Uniti sono sempre stati il mio luogo ideale, fin da piccola desideravo trasferirmi lì.
Grazie ad una mia zia che vive in Ohio da ormai 40 anni, sono potuta andare a conoscere una piccola parte del Paese dei miei sogni per ben due volte.
In America mi sentivo a casa, era tutto come lo immaginavo e non vedo l'ora di tornarci.
Per adesso è tutto, ma presto ci saranno altri aggiornamenti!
